Montague Residence
This 1,200 sf ranch house had shag carpets and dark, small boxy rooms with 8β ceilings throughout. We transformed what was a depressed space into a spacious, uplifting home for a small family. The design was about opening up and exposing the structure's inherent vertical and triangular qualities; the external shape was not altered but the ceilings were removed so as to bring volume and light into the space. We upgraded all of the utilities - adding a tankless water heater and an energy-efficient electric heating and cooling system, two new full baths, a modernized kitchen and an old-school walk-in pantry. We also re-oriented the window and door openings so as to encourage the dwellers to venture out into the expansive surroundings. As important as pleasing the new homeowners, I wanted to make sure that the house approved of the upgrades so we retained itβs most lovely and redeeming qualities and reinforced wherever it had a low self-esteem. I believe that the house is as happy as they are with the changes.
